ree

Selecting the suitable pet for your home is like finding that one missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle. While choosing the right piece makes the picture wholesome, choosing the best suitable pet will make the entire family wholesome with happiness and ecstasy!

If you are still lying on the fence about bringing a pet into your family, you are now in the right place. There are 190-300 dog breeds worldwide, and we know how overwhelmed you are right now to find one from them.

Don’t worry while we are here, this post deals with the selection of dogs and is a complete guide for you that helps in choosing the perfect one which is suitable for your lifestyle.

Know more about the breed:

With annual check-ups and vaccinations, pet ownership also comes with a long-term commitment apart from just adoring and caring for them all day.

And hence, start by educating yourself more about the breed. When it comes to dogs, there are hundreds of breeds with highly varying personality traits. And each breed has different inherited traits. There are also different breeding groups such as Herding, hunting, Sporting, hound, etc.

The characteristics and purpose of the breed vary from one to the other. For example, breeds like Labrador and Boston terrier are extra friendly with strangers. And breeds like Bulldog and Saint Bernard drool a lot compared to the rest. Thus, having a piece of proper knowledge of the breed you are about to choose is important.

Check if you can satisfy their needs:

Dogs are the best companion one could ever have. Interaction with dogs and other pets shows a decrease in cortisol level which is the stress-related hormone. Dogs are often your mood boosters, they help you cope with loneliness and provide people with social support.

Choosing dogs as your pet can be the most exciting part, as they hardly drift their attention away from you once they’ve bonded with you.

But wait... It doesn’t stop there! Dogs help humans in multiple ways and it is essential to provide and pamper them with right care instead of providing them with just a shelter.

If you choose a puppy, growing old their needs and requirements grow as well. And if you are about to choose one from breeds like Siberian husky, Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed, Saint Bernard, it will be hard for them to adapt to the tropical climate, and they require more than just an air-conditioned room. They require vast lands to exercise enough based on their body types. So it is necessary to know and satisfy their needs.

Apart from this, every breed of dog requires grooming, which includes their hygiene levels as well. Before bringing them home, double-check on the factors based on their requirements. Because they also bring your home happiness in abundance!

Activity level:

The activity level of the owner also plays an important role in pet parenting. A sedentary parent usually gets annoyed while dealing with hyperactive and high-energy puppies, while an active parent feels tough around sedentary puppies/dogs.

Choosing pets, especially dogs that go hand-in-hand with your activity levels is the best thing you can do among all the other criteria.

Age of the dog:

Adopting senior dogs often is concerned with medical issues and other health-related concerns. If you are about to choose a puppy, the ideal time to bring them home is after 8 weeks. Anywhere before that can affect their mental health and abilities to socialize, though they can bond with the owners quickly.

And contrary to the popular belief, both adult and senior dogs bond well with the owner like the puppies do. With effective training and patience, they can get along with you so well as they are emotionally mature after 2 years of age.

If you are okay with all those pee puddles and constant biting, nagging in their early stage, you are good to opt for puppies. If not you can choose adult and senior dogs.

Cost:

Breeds like Labradoodle and Havanese dogs are usually high-priced and breeds like Dalmatian and spaniel are high by maintenance along with price as well. Right from spaying, neutering to vaccination, immunization, shelter, and dealing with unexpected health issues; there are a lot of costs the owner has to pay while bringing a pet home.

And for your pet to thrive well, diet and supplements must also be provided. Hence considering these expenses sooner is better for bringing or adopting a pet.

Every pet is the best in its way, the hack lies in choosing the right one according to your needs…

According to a survey conducted in 2021 by Mars Petcare India along with an advisory board of leading animal welfare experts, there are around 80 million homeless dogs and cats in the country and around 34% of pet parents have abandoned their pets on the streets.

And the bottom line here is that you can grow as many pets as you want in your lifetime, but your pet has only one owner in its entire life. And hence do thorough research on your end before bringing one home. Because abandoning a pet after you are sheltered for a while is exactly not the right thing to do.

Happy pet parenting!
